Before and After: How Exterior Painting Transformed These MetroWest Homes

The Transformative Power of Professional Exterior Painting

There's nothing quite like the dramatic transformation that a professional exterior paint job can deliver. A home that looked tired, weathered, and dated can become the standout property on its street in just a few days of expert work. At Alfa Construction Inc (License #192348), we've had the privilege of transforming hundreds of homes throughout the MetroWest area, and the before-and-after results consistently amaze our clients. Here, we share some of our favorite recent projects to illustrate just how much of a difference quality exterior painting makes.

Project 1: A Colonial Revival in Framingham

This stately Framingham Colonial had not been painted in over 15 years. The original light yellow had faded to a dingy cream, and extensive peeling was visible on the south and west-facing walls where New England sun and weather had done the most damage. The wood trim around windows and the front entrance showed signs of early rot.

Our team began by power washing the entire exterior and scraping all loose and failing paint. We replaced several sections of rotted trim with new primed wood before caulking every joint and seam. The homeowner chose a sophisticated palette of warm gray for the body, crisp white for the trim, and a deep navy blue for the front door and shutters. The result was stunning. Neighbors stopped by during the project to compliment the color choice, and the homeowner told us it felt like coming home to a brand-new house. The entire project was completed in six working days.

Project 2: A Cape Cod in Natick

Cape Cod-style homes are iconic throughout Massachusetts, and this Natick home was a classic example. However, years of exposure to New England weather had taken their toll. The white paint had chalked severely, the dark green shutters had faded to a washed-out olive, and the cedar shingles on the upper gable showed bare wood where paint had completely failed.

We performed a thorough preparation that included washing, scraping, sanding, and spot-priming all bare wood surfaces. The homeowner decided to stay with a white body but upgraded to a brighter, more modern warm white. New charcoal-black shutters replaced the outdated green, and the front door was painted a welcoming cranberry red. The clean, fresh palette gave this classic Cape Cod a timeless yet contemporary look that honored its New England heritage while feeling completely renewed.

Project 3: A Split-Level in Ashland

Split-level homes present unique painting challenges because of their multiple elevation changes and varied surface materials. This Ashland home had a combination of wood clapboard on the upper level, a brick facade on the lower level, and wood trim throughout. The previous paint job had been done by an unlicensed painter who cut corners on preparation, resulting in widespread peeling just three years after application.

Alfa Construction Inc stripped the failing paint down to bare wood on the worst sections and feathered the edges on areas where the existing paint was still sound. We applied a high-adhesion primer followed by two full coats of premium exterior acrylic paint. The homeowner selected a modern color scheme with a warm taupe body that complemented the existing brick, bright white trim, and a sage green accent on the front door. The difference was remarkable, transforming a home that had been an eyesore into one of the most attractive properties on the street.

Project 4: A Victorian in Holliston

Victorian homes offer incredible opportunities for color because of their ornate architectural details. This Holliston Victorian had been painted a single flat beige at some point, which hid all of its beautiful gingerbread trim, decorative brackets, and layered moldings under one monotonous color. The homeowner came to us wanting to restore the home's personality.

After meticulous preparation, including detailed hand-scraping of every decorative element, we applied a three-color scheme: a deep slate blue for the body, warm ivory for the main trim, and a rich burgundy to highlight the decorative brackets, window hoods, and porch spindles. The transformation was nothing short of spectacular. The home's architectural details, which had been invisible under the old paint, suddenly popped with depth and character. This project took nine working days due to the level of detail involved, but the result was well worth the investment.

What These Transformations Have in Common

Every one of these projects shares a common thread: thorough preparation. At Alfa Construction Inc, we spend significant time washing, scraping, sanding, priming, and repairing surfaces before a single coat of finish paint is applied. This is where many contractors cut corners, and it is exactly why some paint jobs last three years while ours last fifteen or more. New England weather demands this level of care, and we refuse to compromise on preparation regardless of the project size.
